The International Radiation Protection Association (IRPA)

IRPA is the international voice of the radiation protection profession. It is an association of radiation protection professionals joining through national and regional radiation protection societies. We promote the worldwide enhancement of professional competence, radiation protection culture, and practice by providing benchmarks of good practice, and encouraging the application of the highest standards of professional conduct, skills, and knowledge for the benefit of individuals and society. 

The 2028 17th IRPA International Congress (IRPA17) in Valencia, Spain, aims to be the premiere meeting of the decade for scientists and professionals in radation protection from around the world, sharing good practice and fruitful discussions on the current key issues for our profession.  

The French (SFRP), Italian (AIRP), German-Swiss (FS) and Portuguese (SPPCR) radiation protection societies cooperate with the Spanish (SEPR) society in the organisation of IRPA17, offering a strong guarantee of success.

RADIATION PROTECTION CULTURE

Fostering Radiation Protection Culture is in IRPA’s DNA:

  • RP practitioners and the IRPA Associate Societies are responsible for developing and maintaining this.

  • RP Culture encompasses protection of – patients, workers, public and environment – in all exposure situations – planned, existing, emergency.

  • RP Culture integrates scientific and societal dimensions and an IRPA Congress is a great opportunity to exchange experience and best practice.

For IRPA 17, there are important challenges:

  • New technologies in medical applications of radiation.
  • Impact of AI on RP.
  • New nuclear projects (SMR, AMR, Nuclear Fusion projects,…).
  • New countries & organizations entering into nuclear applications.
  • The review and revision of the ICRP System of Radiological Protection.
